Bringing Business Intelligence on Campus for Smarter Schools
Montgomery Public County Schools (MCPS) is the largest public school system in the state of Maryland and is also among 15 of the largest districts in the entire country. With an enrollment of approximately 156,000 students, it also happens to be regarded among the best education systems in the nation.
K-12 education in the U.S. is extremely focused on measurement, assessment and college readiness. Traditionally, school districts have collected and used data primarily for reporting purposes, but a district of this size has the capacity and need for advanced data collection and analysis. MCPS worked with a team including RDA experts in data warehousing and analytics to enable administrators to go beyond mere reporting to use data to drive management and content decisions at the district and school levels.
RDA assisted in developing an enterprise-level data warehouse solution for the school district. The solution was developed incrementally over time, and is scalable as the district grows and additional needs are identified. The data warehouse enables administrators to access a single, authoritative source of information in order for them to perform the analysis to make decisions regarding the schools and their students.
With an integrated data management solution, district administrators are able to collect, store and view data using many different filters. With custom analysis capabilities, patterns and links between behavior and performance can be identified. This valuable knowledge allows administrators to make proactive decisions concerning changes in management, staffing, and even content delivered within the schools. This includes creating an Elementary and Secondary Dashboard for principals and administrators; PARCC reports for tracking student performance; creating a Career and College Readiness Tool to help prepare students to life after high school. In addition, a number of operational processes and state reporting requirements are also fulfilled from the data warehouse.
