Website Renovation and Rewrite Reinforces Brand Message

Project at a Glance

RDA revamped the website for a professional sports franchise, creating a more flexible and easy to update platform that reduced the need for technical support and communicates a consistent brand message.

About Our Client

RDA's client comprises the individual owners who purchased a professional basketball team, an NHL professional hockey team, and operating rights to a sports arena.

Background

The public Internet presence for the sports arena had been in place since 1999. The look and feel of the site, as well as the technology, was severely outdated and needed to be updated to compete with other venues around the country. In addition, the "brand" of the site did not account for the recently added teams, which needed to be a central theme behind the site.

In addition, editorial changes to the existing site required programming changes, which demanded significant technical maintenance overhead for our client.

Solution Detail

The RDA team provided a complete overhaul of the website architecture for the arena from legacy technology to the Microsoft .NET platform (consistent with the sports team's website). All associated applications were ported to the new platform.

The website renovation included the following components:

User Experience: The RDA team completely revamped the user experience, spanning graphics, navigation, and branding. The Fan Mail template was reconfigured to conform to the new user experience as well.

Branding: RDA updated the site branding to better associate the arena with the new sports teams to improve the overall visibility and marketability of their products.

Content Management: The site was updated to incorporate a Content Management System, empowering the users to update content without the need for technical assistance. This was especially critical for the events calendar, which was subject to constant modification and needed to be easily accessed by the marketing staff. Now users have the ability to develop and publish content in real-time. The RDA team also developed a content management administration tool for the users and Web usage reporting capability.

Site Management: Our team migrated the site to a platform consistent with the existing and planned infrastructure of our client and removed dependencies on resources specific to the previous owners.

In addition, our team prepared and facilitated user training for the new site.

Benefits

Our client no longer has to depend on technical team members to make content updates to the site. Authorized staff members are now able to develop and publish content in real-time.

An updated brand better associates the arena to the teams, thus improving overall visibility and marketability of our client's products.

All platforms have been standardized to .NET technology, which enhances our client's flexibility and responsiveness to new initiatives.

Technically Speaking

The previous website relied on CGI technology on a Unix server. The new site is all .NET on Windows Server 2003. The project incorporated C#, SQL Server, and ASP.NET.
